Eco-Resolution Season

Posted on: January 25th, 2013 by Aubrey Salaiz No Comments

January 2013!  It’s here!  We’ve made it!  And we resolve to be greener!

The entire staff is brimming with excitement for all the positive plans and changes that come with the turn of a new year.   Every department is motivated and hard at work coming up with new, inventive, eco-friendly ways to bring our 2013 events a more elegant and personalized touch, all while still remaining true to the Barr Mansion ideology.  From the front entrance of the Mansion all the way to the Ballroom floors, we are refurbishing, painting, polishing, cleaning, organizing and making everything all nice and shiny and “green” for this year’s weddings and special events.

Despite being identified as a “well-oiled machine” by a recent client in an exit survey, we know that there is ALWAYS room for improvement.  Your comments, recommendations and advice have become our motivation and have inspired us to undertake a number of projects aimed at improving our facilities and services — including re-examining how we manage our day-of event staff.  You’ll spend months hammering out the details with our Event Coordinators… but on the day of the event, it is the behind-the-scenes work and the impeccable service of our Banquet Team which ensures the event’s success.  As Banquet Manager, I am excited to implement new practices that focus on improving our established sustainable actions and procedures, increasing worker efficiency and promoting better staff communication.  We know that all our efforts in these areas will contribute to a better experience for everyone involved –  from our clients to our guests, from vendors to staff, and everyone else in between.

Happy New Year,

Cake Trend: Simple and classic wedding cakes

Posted on: January 4th, 2013 by Elyse Shumsky No Comments

We’ve been seeing a big change in wedding cake designs lately; couples have been keeping it simple and elegant! Which matches the Barr Mansion aesthetic perfectly.

When choosing the design of your cake, keep in mind that it will be featured in many of your photos. It can also be the focal point at your wedding reception, sometimes the first thing guests see.

The most popular designs we are seeing for 2013 are lace and fresh flowers.

Lace can make a stylish and sophisticated statement anywhere, even your cake!

Another timeless choice is handmade, edible, flowers or fresh blooms. It’s a chic yet subtle way to make your cake stand out.

Your wedding cake should be a reflection of who you are and the “theme” of your wedding.

Tip:  Try using the elements from your bridal gown, such as ruffles, lace, or flowers to incorporate on the cake.

Happy Planning!

Elyse xoxo

Gardens in Bloom: October

Posted on: November 1st, 2012 by Adele No Comments

One of our favorite blooms from the garden right now is Ageratina altissima — which is more commonly known as White Snakeroot.  Its tiny, delicate white blooms are in full force and are attracting loads of butterflies…

Thanks to our head gardener and horticulturist, Amy Jones, for sharing (and for keeping this plant so happy!).

Would you consider a Halloween wedding?   October 31st falls on a Friday night in 2014, so if you’re newly engaged and considering it…   just saying.

Here’s a little inspiration for you, via our Pinterest.  One of these weddings actually was the wedding I fell in love with aesthetically, and ended up using as inspiration for my own wedding decór (which took place  nowhere near Halloween!).

Organics in the News…

If you have friends in California, we hope you’ll forward Michael Pollan’s recent article in the NYT Magazine to them.

“California’s Proposition 37, which would require that genetically modified (G.M.) foods carry a label, has the potential … to change the politics of food not just in California but nationally too.”
