Thanks to photographer Mike Reed for capturing these stunning shots of Lindsay and Shaun’s wedding at Barr Mansion! This August ceremony was a classic affair, with a palette of purples and the bride in a stunning lace gown. Romance was in full bloom, as were the many flowers adorning the ceremony. The bride, groom, and their joyous friends and family enjoyed a Second Harvest feast in our glass-windowed reception hall, and the happy couple embarked on their married life with well-wishes from all those around them.

When Sharon and Jay wed at Barr Mansion in June, their colorful ceremony was a sight for sore eyes! The bride wore a feathery full-length gown accented by a vibrant bouquet of brightly colored flowers. The focus was on local and seasonal, from the succulent boutonnieres worn by the groom and his groomsmen to the succulent Second Harvest feast enjoyed by the happy couple and their guests in our glass-windowed reception hall. Thanks to Cory Ryan for the beautiful photographs!

Monica and Edward brought the party to Barr Mansion for their June wedding! In addition to enjoying our seasonal Second Harvest feast, the bride and groom brought along a little piece of downtown Austin in the form of the “Peached” food trailer. And the party didn’t stop there- guests relished a rich array of gourmet cakes and chocolates, amid gorgeous crystal and white-flowered centerpieces, all the while being serenaded by a mariachi band! Thanks to Stella Alessi for the fantastic photos.

Amy and Tim

Posted on: September 18th, 2010 by admin 1 Comment

Amy and Tim were married on June 27th.  Here are both of their thoughts on the fire and the weeks leading up to their wedding.

From the Groom…

I was lying on the couch, when I was awoken by lightning.  For some strange reason my first thought was, “I hope that didn’t hit anything.”

The next day a friend called during lunch asking if I had heard about Barr Mansion, as he proceeded to tell me about the fire, my heart sunk.  How would I ever tell Amy. We had looked for months, and she had fallen in love with the Artisan Ballroom. As I told her what had happened, I felt completely helpless.  There was nothing I could do to make the situation right.

The Sunday after the fire, Barr Mansion held an open house so that everyone could see the new arrangements that had been made.  We sat in the tent and had dinner, and I didn’t even have to ask.  I knew exactly what she was thinking and how she felt.  This wasn’t the Ballroom.  It didn’t even resemble the Ballroom.

We came home, and she immediately got on the computer and started searching for new wedding venues.  The wedding was two weeks away, there was no way I could handle the stress of trying to plan a wedding in two weeks.

We sat down with Abby and talked about how we were feeling, and finally decided to put our trust in her, that she would make the tent beautiful.  Throughout the whole process, Abby had been wonderful, supportive, and accommodating.  There was no reason to believe this would be any different.

On our wedding night, we walked through the side doors and were absolutely amazed.  The quaint tent had been transformed into a beautiful ballroom.  Again, I didn’t have to ask, but this time I knew Amy was happy.

From the Bride…

We got engaged last July 2009, after dating a little over a year. Our relationship was long distance for a year; he was in California continuing his training with a sports medicine fellowship, and I stayed in Houston. Although challenging, the distance helped us really get to know each other. We moved to Austin immediately after our engagement, and the wedding process started.

The search for our “perfect place” wasn’t easy. Two bridal shows and an intense search into venue locations, we finally found Barr Mansion after seven months of looking.  I knew as soon as we walked into the grand doorway entrance, that this was my “dream” wedding venue. Everything about the design, ambience, and natural elements just felt right. I finally felt like I could imagine myself getting married in that magical ballroom, and dancing the night away. Every detail I fell in love with, every twinkling light and lantern, the multitude of natural textures, and the fountain. Even the path to the restrooms was special with a tree trunk that supported the roof.  Abby’s vision was in sync with my ideas and made everything seem so easy.

The day I found out about the fire was almost surreal. A friend actually called Tim with the news. I was shocked when he told me, and in disbelief. As I read the email from Barr Mansion, all I could do was cry; I felt my heart was crushed. The image in my head was gone. Everyone was calling and asking questions, or seeing what they could do, and all I wanted was my “dream” wedding back. I didn’t talk to anyone for several days, cried a lot, and finally wrote Abby a letter. Thankful for all the times before in which she always made me feel so comfortable sharing my thoughts, I opened up and was able to speak right from the heart. I waited until the open house so I could just take it in and see, maybe it wouldn’t be that bad.  Devastated with the idea of a tent wedding, it was nothing like I wanted compared to the unique setting and natural beauty of the ballroom.

A few days after the open house event, we had a meeting with Abby. She stayed late to meet with us, and spent a few hours going over the new plan and listening to our ideas and adding in her thoughts until we something to work with. It was the first time the sad feeling in my gut went away a little bit and I just let whatever be. I thought “well this must be our big bad wedding disaster story, now that that’s over our wedding day will be fine.”

The wedding day, I was so nervous to look at the tent before the ceremony, I stayed away until I walked in for the first time married. I was blown away! And the wedding day went wonderfully! Looking back, I am truly thankful for all the staff at Barr mansion, but mostly for Abby, who didn’t quit and worked endlessly to make this bride’s dream a reality!

Anneke and Zac

Posted on: November 3rd, 2009 by admin No Comments

Anneke wed Zac on August 29, 2009. It was a beautiful evening, but Texas… so they wed indoors facing the 40-foot glass wall of the Artisan Ballroom.
The bride had a beautiful dress, perfect for the summer. It was light and airy and had a “feathered” look to it. She looked stunning in it, and she also looked comfortable… which you don’t see very often….
A sweet couple and quite used to the wedding business—the bride’s family runs a restaurant, which also caters weddings. Being in the business, they had strong ideas about what food they wanted to serve at the wedding and how they wanted it served. They wanted a family style service, with platters of food brought out and set in the middle of the table, which their guests could then pass around to each other. Family style service is a great take on a plated style service—original and fun, and it promotes conversation at the table. In addition to cake for the dessert, the couple provided beautiful fruit tarts—a refreshing and scrumptious way to end a big meal.

The flowers used at the wedding were striking and different, which seemed to be the theme of this wedding—original ideas that were elegant yet playful and fun. The bride carried a stunning bouquet of blue thistles, mango calla lilies, and burgundy orchids. Amongst the flowers were wispy feathers that really tied the bouquet in with the bride’s dress. Copper embellishments over blue satin ribbon finished off the look. The boutonnieres were mango calla lilies tied with blue satin ribbon and copper embellishments.

Many thanks to our good friend and photographer, Peter Staats for these images.

Callie and Randy

Posted on: September 23rd, 2009 by admin No Comments

Callie and Randy were married in front of the rose garden under an arch of peonies on a July evening just before sunset. With such a sweet, personable young couple, it was no surprise that almost 400 guests came to their wedding.

The bouquets featured soft pink peonies, cream spray roses and green anethum. Tall centerpieces with curly willow and huge blooms of antique hydrangea decorated the tables. Hydrangea blooms with spray roses lined the aisle of the ceremony.

It was a gorgeous day, bright blue skies and a nice breeze. Guests enjoyed refreshing open-face tomato sandwiches and zuchini rolls among other appetizers during the reception. Tables scattered on the patio areas in front of the ballroom, where fans were set up to create a cool breeze as guests dined and danced the night away.

Special thanks to Allison Notgrass with Focal Point for these wonderful images—beautiful work!

Jill and Lee

Jill and Lee were married at Barr Mansion in front of the rose garden on July 18th, 2009. A couple to remember, they had such a sweet attitude and their devotion to each other was easy to see. The bride carried antique roses with bear grass looped around the blossoms and the stems were were wrapped in variegated leaves, creating a very unique and beautiful look.

Nothing could stop this bride and groom from walking down the aisle—though a hook and eye closure on the bride’s dress sure did give it a try. Other than that, without a hitch Jill and Lee said “I do.” Later during the reception, the groom gave a very sweet toast to Jill right before the cake cutting, which just about brought the entire room to tears. The bride’s cake was a cheesecake covered in seasonal berries—another truly unique touch for this wedding.

They truly were a laid-back, fun couple… which was evident by the cooler of beer they brought to the rehearsal and offered to the Barr Mansion staff, and the fun pictures Jill took in the bathtub in the Mansion. Come back and see us Jill and Lee!
